Public Hearing On Derby Budget Tonight

The Derby tax board adopted a preliminary budget May 6 that carries a tax increase of about 1.2 percent.

The $38.3 million 2014 – 2015 budget would add .44 mills to the mill rate, bringing it to 35.78.

Currently the mill rate is 35.34.

If the budget is approved as is, a property assessed at $105,000 would see a $46 increase in taxes next year.

To calculate your possible tax increase, take the latest assessment of your house, multiply the dollar amount by the current mill rate of 35.34 and divide by 1,000.

That will give you your current tax bill.

Repeat the process using the proposed mill rate of 35.77 to get your new tax bill.

Subtract the two numbers to see the increase.

The proposed budget carries a spending increase of about $1 million compared to the budget adopted last year.

It allocates $16,583,315 for Derby Public Schools, a 2.7 percent increase from the current budget.

A public hearing on the proposed budget has been scheduled for Monday, May 19 at 6 p.m. in the Aldermanic Chambers of Derby City Hall.

There was little discussion of the budget during the tax board’s meeting May 6, but that’s understandable, as members have been working on it since March.

This budget season was also different than the last several budget cycles in Derby, when there would be clashes at the end of the process between tax board chairman James Butler and then-Mayor Anthony Staffieri, or conflict over spending policies between the former mayor and former schools superintendent Stephen Tracy.

Mayor Anita Dugatto, a former member of the tax board, thanked the elected officials for their hard work Tuesday, as did Butler.
