The city’s tax board voted to create a retirement-severance line within the police department Monday, then filled it with just over $79,000.
Although his name or position was not mentioned publicly, the tax board made the move because Derby Police Chief Gene Mascolo wants to retire.
It is unclear when the chief will retire. Additional information about the situation was not immediately available Tuesday night.
The tax board met briefly in an executive session meeting to discuss the creation of the retirement-severance account.
Executive sessions are closed-door meetings of public bodies allowed under certain conditions, such as when discussing legal strategy or specific public employees.
In addition to members of the tax board, city treasurer Keith McLiverty, finance director Henry Domurad and Derby police Assistant Chief Gerald Narowski attended the executive session.
After the executive session concluded, the tax board voted in public to:
- Direct the finance department to create a new line item within the police department budget called “retirement-severance”
- Transfer $63,480.50 from an overtime/wages account into “retirement-severance”
- Transfer $15,677.50 from an education reimbursement account into “retirement-severance”
The vote was unanimous.
