Derby Fire Marshal Phil Hawks (left) talks to building official Carlo Sarmiento after a fire in a home on Oak Street March 29.

Food burning on a stove caused a fire that gutted the inside of a home on Derby’s Oak Street Thursday, the city’s fire marshal said.

Two people inside the house were able to escape unharmed after the fire began.

A firefighter sustained a minor cut while battling the blaze.

The fire was reported at 62 Oak St. in west Derby about 5 p.m.

It looks like it started on the stove,” Derby Fire Marshal Phil Hawks said Monday. The occupant was cooking and the food ignited and it took off from there.”

The cause has been ruled accidental.

About 60 firefighters from Derby and Shelton responded and were able to knock down the fire quickly despite limited access to the house at the end of the narrow, dead-end street.

Hawks said the flames were contained to the house’s kitchen area, but the rest of the home suffered extensive smoke and heat damage.

The Red Cross was called to the scene to help out the people who live at the home with temporary housing.
