Derby Mayoral Candidate's Father Passed Away On Saturday

Alderman Gino DiGiovanni

DERBY — Alderman Gino DiGiovanni’s father passed away on Saturday, according to a post attributed to the Alderman’s wife, Heidi, on Facebook.

More than 200 people responded to the post with words of sympathy for the family.

Services had not been announced as of 11 a.m. Sunday.

Gino DiGiovanni, Sr. had been in the hospital since at least the September Republican primary, which saw DiGiovanni Jr. defeat incumbent Mayor Richard Dziekan in order to secure the Republican line in the general election scheduled for Tuesday, Nov. 7.

Dziekan is still running, but as a petitioning candidate.

DiGiovanni Sr. previously owned DiGiovanni & Sons Construction, which Gino Jr. now operates.

Joseph DiMartino, the Democrat running for mayor, expressed his sympathy for the DiGiovanni family in a note posted to social media.

Sending deepest sympathy to the entire DiGiovanni family on the loss of their beloved father, husband and grandfather,” the post read.

In addition to DiGiovanni, DiMartino and Dziekan, Sharlene McEvoy is running for mayor as a petitioning candidate.
