The Bradley School was in lockdown for a short time Friday after a report of a person with a weapon in the area.
Derby emergency services received a report of a car crash at about 1:20 p.m. at the intersection of David Humphreys and O’Sullivan roads.
That’s less than a half-mile from Bradley elementary.
According to a Facebook post from police, a witness reported a person tossed a weapon away from the crash site.
“A handgun was recovered at the scene and the operator of the vehicle is in custody with charges pending,” according to police.
The report of a weapon caused police to inform school officials and trigger the lockdown. There was no direct threat to the school, police said.
The school immediately issued an alert to parents and police posted an update to Facebook at 2:16 p.m. saying suspects was no longer thought to be in the area.
One female and two men are believed to have left the scene of the crash, police said.
The incident remains under investigation. Police originally received info about a white male leaving the scene, but that turned out to be unrelated, police said.

The incident caused the school district to slightly delay the buses from leaving Derby High School in west Derby. Police didn’t want students to be dropped off in the area of the search.
That delay was also expected to cause delays of about 20 minutes for Bradley School students.
