Derby Police: Protect Yourself Against Opportunistic Car Bandits

DERBY — Police Thursday posted footage of a group of opportunistic thieves randomly searching vehicles in the city’s Hilltop neighborhood.

Police posted the video to show the moxie and randomness” of vehicle break-ins, an all-too-common crime.

The crime happened at 12:27 a.m. Feb. 27.

In the video a car crawls down the street, then two people get out and approach two vehicles parked in a driveway, their faces obscured. A motion detector illuminates the driveway, causing one of the criminals to turn around and walk away.

The other person opens the unlocked door of a pickup truck, then rummages through the front seat area.

Police did not say what was taken from the vehicle, if anything.

The perpetrators are simply looking for an unlocked door,” police said. Don’t be a victim – lock your doors and leave valuables out of sight!”
