DERBY — Superintendent of Schools Matthew Conway sent the following message to parents the evening of Jan. 8.
FYI: PowerSchool is a third-party application teachers, students, and families use to track schedules, assignments, progress reports, and grades, among other uses.
Also, PowerSchool isn’t limited to just Derby. The company notified customers throughout the U.S.
Important Notice: PowerSchool Cybersecurity Incident
Good evening Derby Family!
We want to inform you about a recent cybersecurity incident involving our Student Information System (SIS), PowerSchool. At this time, they have not confirmed if our data was impacted.
Key Points:
- On December 28, 2024, PowerSchool became aware of unauthorized access to certain customer data through their support portal, PowerSource.
- On January 7, 2025 PowerSchool sent notification to districts regarding the possible breach.
- On January 8, 2025 PowerSchool conducted a Webinar to provide districts with information and answer questions.
- The unauthorized access was isolated to the PowerSource portal (used for SIS support), and no other PowerSchool products were affected.
- Data impacted includes information related to students and educators in our district such as name, address and email.
- There is no evidence of ongoing unauthorized activity or malware.
- PowerSchool has confirmed that the accessed data was deleted and not shared.
- Enhanced security measures have been implemented, including deactivating compromised credentials and resetting passwords.
- We are awaiting further information from PowerSchool. They anticipate to be able to confirm exactly who was impacted by January 17, 2025
What this means for you:
- No immediate action is required from you at this time.
- PowerSchool will notify directly impacted individuals and offer support.
- Credit monitoring services will be provided to affected adults, and identity protection services for impacted minors.
- We will continue to monitor the situation and provide updates as needed.
