DERBY – Members of the tax board March 11 set their schedule to come up with a new city budget.
Here is the schedule they adopted:
March 18: Derby school budget (click here for an overview of the proposal)
March 25: Mayor Joseph DiMartino presents a budget.
April 1: The tax board (Derby Board of Apportionment and Taxation) could adopt a preliminary budget.
April 8: A public hearing on the proposed budget.
April 15: The budget could be adopted by the tax board.
Derby Finance Director Brian Hall noted there is some wiggle room with the timeline.
The Derby City Charter gives the board until the last business day of April to adopt a budget.
The same charter also says the mayor should have presented a budget on March 1.
That did not happen. The Valley Indy asked Hall about it after Tuesday’s tax board meeting.
Hall said the administration opted to have other departments go first. He noted the board of education asked for more time to submit a budget due to uncertainties involving state and federal aid.
“We’re just working through the process,” Hall said. “I’m confident we will be able to get everything done in April.”
Both the fire department and the police department made budget presentations March 11.
