Fire damaged a Derby pizzeria on Minerva Street Sunday night.
There were no injuries reported and Derby Fire Marshal Phil Hawks is investigating.
Firefighters were sent to Bella’s Pizza at 9 Minerva St. at about 10:30 p.m. after a neighbor reported seeing smoke coming from the business.
The pizzeria was closed at the time of the fire.
Derby Fire Department Assistant Chief Mike Goodman said the first firefighters on the scene could see smoke filling the small restaurant.
Firefighters broke the front door to get in, then quickly descended to the smoke-clogged basement, where the fire is thought to have started.
The heat downstairs was intense, as it was a windowless basement.
“There was a small fire in the basement, unknown at this time as to what caused it,” Goodman said.
Firefighters then checked to see if flames had extended to any other parts of the building, which it had not.
Bella’s Pizza is on Minerva near the intersection with Main Street, across from Derby City Hall.
