ANSONIA — A cat may have died in a house fire at 1 Silver Hill Road on Monday evening, firefighters said.

No human injuries were reported.

The city fire marshal’s office is investigating the cause and origin of the blaze, which was reported around 6 p.m.

The first firefighters on scene reported heavy smoke in the area and flames coming out the roof of the one-story, single-family house.

From what I understand, somebody called in a house fire. I’m not sure at this time who called in. We had crews responding, confirmed that it was a structure fire, and our crews went to work attempting to extinguish the fire,” Ansonia Fire Department Chief Alex Horjatschun said.

Firefighters seemed to be concentrating in the home’s attic, cutting holes in the roof to vent the smoke and flames.“There’s extensive fire damage throughout the entire house and the fire marshal is investigating,” the chief said.

Horjatschun said he did not know if anyone was home when the fire was reported.

Firefighters on scene said as many as two pets might have been lost in the blaze, and that a firefighter tried to save a feline by using CPR.

I have been told that there was a cat that perished but I haven’t received confirmation on what happened,” the chief said.

About 50 firefighters were on scene, with units from Ansonia, Derby and Seymour.

The house is on the Ansonia-Derby border, across from the former Birmingham nursing home, which is now used for employee parking by Griffin Hospital.

Firefighters were still on scene as of 7:22 p.m.
