The Sleep Wellness Center at Griffin Hospital has recently completed a state-of-the-art equipment upgrade to its equipment, adding advanced digital and video technology.
The Center, which is fully accredited by the American Academy of Sleep Medicine (AASM), has been diagnosing and treating sleep disorders for more than 12 years.
The Center’s new equipment upgrade will improve patient comfort and allow the Center to perform polysomnographs — or sleep studies — at the highest level of diagnostic quality, according to the Center’s Medical Director, K. Marya Chaisson, M.D., a board certified sleep medicine specialist.
“Our patients can be confident they are receiving the most accurate and comprehensive sleep studies available anywhere, which translates into more precise treatment planning and improved outcomes,” said Dr. Chaisson.
Sleep disorders affect nearly 44 million Americans, with an additional 35 million reporting occasional problems. Combined, this represents roughly 28% of the U.S. population, and the impact is significant.
Prolonged sleep deprivation not only results in severe symptoms that interfere with work and social activities.
If left untreated, sleep disorders can lead to serious medical conditions, including hypertension, stroke, and cardiac failure.
Additionally, driver fatigue, often the result of a sleep disorder, is responsible for an estimated 100,000 motor vehicle accidents and 1,500 deaths each year, according to the U.S. National Highway Traffic Safety Administration.
