Hearing In Domurad Lawsuit Slated For July

A hearing on whether former Derby finance director Henry Domurad Jr. will get his job back was put off until next month Tuesday morning at Superior Court in Milford.

Domurad sued Mayor Anthony Staffieri last month, claiming the mayor wrongly terminated him in April.

In his initial court filing, Domurad’s lawyer requested a show cause” hearing, during which the city would have been compelled to explain why Domurad could not be reinstated.

The show cause hearing was initially scheduled for May 21 in Milford court.

However, attorneys for the city and Domurad huddled outside court for several hours May 21, then emerged with a proposed settlement.

But after Derby Aldermen rejected that settlement — twice, first last month and then again Monday night — the case returned to court Tuesday.

There, Judge Arthur Hiller spoke with lawyers representing Domurad and the city behind closed doors before continuing the case to July 3.

He told attorneys to have memoranda on the case and other documents filed by July 2.

Outside the courtroom, Domurad’s lawyer, John Gesmonde, said next month’s hearing will cover only the issue of whether Domurad should be reinstated while the case plays out in court.

But all of the interesting factual things will come out of it,” he added.

The vacancy in the finance director’s office at City Hall hindered Derby’s budget process, which ended last month with the city adopting a $37.1 million spending plan for next year.
