History Program Scheduled At Derby Public Library

The Derby Public Library History Series continues on Monday, November 13, 2023 at 6:00 pm with John Trumbull: Revolutionary Spy, presented by Connecticut Historian, Morgan O’Brien.

During the Revolutionary War, John Trumbull, son of the first non-royal Governor of Connecticut, served as an aide-de-camp to General George Washington. After resigning due to a dispute with Congress about his position, and with urging from Benjamin Franklin and others, Trumbull traveled to London to study under renowned painter Benjamin West. With his paintings primarily focusing on events during the Revolutionary War, John Trumbull became an important artist.

While working in his London studio, Trumbull painted Battle of Bunker Hill and Death of General Montgomery in the Attack on Quebec; both works are now housed at the Yale University Art Gallery in New Haven, Connecticut. John Trumbull’s acclaimed paintings of the American Revolution include his 1818 work, Declaration of Independence, which hangs in the rotunda of the U.S. Capitol in Washington, D.C.

Through twists and turns, Morgan O’Brien will take the audience through Trumbull’s life and artwork as well as explain the possibility of Trumbull being one of Benjamin Franklin’s spies.

This is a free event, but registration is requested. To sign up to attend or to obtain further information, please contact the Derby Public Library at 203 – 736-1482 or visit derbypubliclibrary.org.
