On Tuesday November 7, 2023, the residents of Derby voted to take their city back.

I owe a sincere thank you to everyone who voted for me and the rest of the slate on Election Day. I am humbled by the decision of the residents of Derby, as you entrusted me to lead us towards a more financially stable city, and a more united community. Even if you did not vote for me, or anyone on our slate, thank you for exercising your right to vote. That alone is so important. I will work for you regardless of your political affiliation and over the next two years, I will work to earn your support.

The Derby Public Library History Series continues on Monday, November 13, 2023 at 6:00 pm with John Trumbull: Revolutionary Spy, presented by Connecticut Historian, Morgan O’Brien.

During the Revolutionary War, John Trumbull, son of the first non-royal Governor of Connecticut, served as an aide-de-camp to General George Washington. After resigning due to a dispute with Congress about his position, and with urging from Benjamin Franklin and others, Trumbull traveled to London to study under renowned painter Benjamin West. With his paintings primarily focusing on events during the Revolutionary War, John Trumbull became an important artist.

I wanted to take a moment to once again thank all the voters who came out on Tuesday and re-elected me to serve another term on the Derby Board of Education. Letter: Fellow Derby BOAT Member A 'Loose Cannon'

by | Sep 8, 2023 8:56 am | Comments (0)

Ms. Desroches’s baseless attacks on the administration are nothing new. In meetings of the Board of Apportionment and Taxation (BoAT) on which I serve, she shamelessly ignores the agenda items, which are the purpose of the meeting, and engages in long-winded attacks against the finance office.

When her baseless attacks are exposed by the acting finance director, her common refrain has been I don’t understand.” That should tell readers all they need to know!

Letter: Downtown Derby Development Is Stalled Because Of Flawed Process

by | Sep 8, 2023 8:56 am | Comments (0)

Motivation for today’s letter derives from a mailing by Derby’s mayor that accuses 6 alderman of political bias and obstructing downtown re-development.

They are accused of stalling” progress by tabling motions the mayor states are necessary to advance developer negotiations.

After listening to the audio record of the August 10th BOA meeting, reviewing the associated information packets, and researching prior BOA meeting minutes regarding the Factory Street parcel acquisition, I believe the action taken by the 6 aldermen to table the motions was necessary and appropriate.

The confusion, misunderstandings, and misgivings that surfaced during the August 10th meeting could not be ignored. Furthermore, these are symptoms of a flawed process, not flawed people.

Letter: Elect Joe DiMartino To Safeguard Derby's Finances

by | Jul 30, 2023 7:32 pm | Comments (0)

To the Editor,

Initially, when I heard about the ongoing financial problems in the Dziekan administration’s finance office, I was somewhat surprised that after 5 ½ years into his administration, we are still having major financial issues, but then again, I realized it is just more of the same. The latest fiasco involves the bouncing of checks to our city of Derby vendors.

Recently Rich Dziekan’s finance office had attempted to pay the hard-working vendors who work hard for our city, only to find out that the checks they were given did not have the necessary funds to cover their checks. Whether this is an accounting issue, banking, issue, or timing issue, the bottom line is, it is continued evidence that Rich Dziekan and his administration, is simply unable to get a handle around our finance department.

Letter: Derby Alders' Failure To Act Costing Derby Greatly

DERBY — The BoAA’s failure to act on the purchase of the metal recycling center and a bond refunding resolution will cost the city greatly.

The city has been exploring ways of removing the metal recycling center from our downtown for a long time It is a huge impediment to downtown economic development. Agreements are in place for that to happen in the next 6 – 8 months once they are executed at zero cost to Derby taxpayers, allowing the property to be redeveloped, and produce tax revenue.

The city was also looking to restructure its bonded indebtedness, take advantage of favorable interest rates and save $500,000 in the FY 23 – 24 budget.

All that was needed for both was the approval of the Board of Aldermen/Alderwomen (BOAA).

Letter: Ansonia Republicans Bully Instead Of Debate

ANSONIA — Lori Vaccaro’s May 31 letter continues to follow the Republication strategy of bedazzle, deflect and attack since Ansonia Democrats have exposed massive Financial Mismanagement by the Cassetti team. Most of Mr. Vaccaro’s letter is a rinse and repeat to discredit any view from the Democratic party. The Budget and mill rate has been approved, he tries to deface Democrats, and taxpayers and spin more half truths.

Letter: 'Code Red' Alerts Shouldn't Be Used For Propaganda

by | Jun 15, 2023 7:54 am | Comments (0)

To the Editor,

I recently received a communication from the City of Derby emergency Code Red” alert system. I had expected it to be something serious and something deserving of an intrusion into my phone, text and email. Instead, I found it was directing me to a one sided State of the City” message on behalf of Rich Dziekan.

When I signed up for the Code Red” alert system, I gave my number and contact information because I thought it would be used for appropriate reasons. I expected to hear about street closings, inclement weather issues, safety concerns and other real-life emergencies. This is what it is intended to be used for. I never imagined that it would be used for the mayor’s campaign reelection and to spread political propaganda.
