Letter: 'Code Red' Alerts Shouldn't Be Used For Propaganda

To the Editor,

I recently received a communication from the City of Derby emergency Code Red” alert system. I had expected it to be something serious and something deserving of an intrusion into my phone, text and email. Instead, I found it was directing me to a one sided State of the City” message on behalf of Rich Dziekan.

When I signed up for the Code Red” alert system, I gave my number and contact information because I thought it would be used for appropriate reasons. I expected to hear about street closings, inclement weather issues, safety concerns and other real-life emergencies. This is what it is intended to be used for. I never imagined that it would be used for the mayor’s campaign reelection and to spread political propaganda.

The use of our taxpayer funded City of Derby emergency Code Red” alert system to attempt to showcase what you believe your political accomplishments is simply wrong. What is also wrong is to try to hide 1.5 years of inactivity by pretending to communicate a flurry of activity. Rich Dziekan is nothing more than a 6‑month Mayor. It would be funny, if it wasn’t sad, but you can tell that it is election time because that’s the only time Rich Dziekan ever communicates.

I take great offense that our taxpayer dollars are being used to fund his reelection campaign. This is not the first time either that he has dipped into taxpayer money to try to help himself. He started by sending out those grammar filled newsletters that contained many factual and grammatical errors. Now, it is being followed up with by something very similar, and something that is also very sloppy, in the way of this most recent Code Red” alert system message.

I realize it’s election season, I have no issues with Rich Dziekan, attempting to use smoke and mirrors to pretend to have actually accomplished something. I just have a really big problem when he uses our taxpayer money to do it.
