Housatonic Council Completes 2012 Scouting Food Drive

Contributed PhotoThe Housatonic Council has just completed its 2012 Scouting for Food Drive run by the Paugassett Lodge, Order of the Arrow.

Thousands of items were donated by the generous people of the valley and collected by over 1,000 Scouts and Scouters over two weekends.

The Order of the Arrow Lodge donated $2,000 towards the door hangers, boxes, and other support items needed for the drive. Under the leadership of the Lodge Chief James Ernst the drive was successfully completed on Saturday Nov. 11, 2012.

Community service is one of a society’s benchmarks for health. When people are personally involved in supporting their neighborhoods, the outcome is a renewed sense of unity and civic pride.

Contributed PhotoVolunteerism is a hallmark of American society, and helping other people is an integral part of the Boy Scouts of America program.

This year’s drive was especially needed to supplement the local food pantry’s hurt by the additional burden brought on by Hurricane Sandy.

Salvation Army and Trinity Episcopal Church received the entire amount of food collected.

All the food pantries commented they are still very low going into the winter and holiday season.

There is still an urgent need to help them stock their shelves to help others. They will take any food or cash contributions to help support the families they support during this time of need.
