July Programs At Derby’s Kellogg Environmental Center

The Connecticut Department of Energy and Environmental Protection (CT DEEP) announces the following free programs at Kellogg Environmental Center, located at 500 Hawthorne Avenue, Derby, CT during the month of July. 

Join others to learn about a variety of topics including geocaching, wildflowers and even a visit by Flat Stanley. 

Geocaching
Thursday, July 5th – 1:30 p.m. to 4:00 p.m.

Geocaching, using a GPS to find hidden caches in various places, is the ultimate scavenger hunt. 

We will hike through Osbornedale State Park to find one of these caches as well as fix one that is currently in need of repair. Some steep hiking is involved, designed for kids ages 10 and up.

Butterflies

Saturday, July 7th – 10:30 a.m. to 12:00 noon

Butterflies are found in a diverse range of geographical areas and have thousands of species worldwide. Participants will learn about a variety of butterfly species found locally and internationally and explore the butterfly garden on the Kellogg Estate. Supplies for butterfly arts and crafts will be provided. Open to all ages.

Flat Stanley Visits the Kellogg Environmental Center

Wednesday, July 11th – 10:30 a.m. to 11:30 a.m.

Children will join Flat Stanley on an adventure to learn the history of the Kellogg Center and some of the natural tidbits around the center. The program is intended for ages 7 – 10. Please bring a camera.

Into the Night
Saturday, July 14th – 8:30 p.m.

Families are invited to participate in an evening program to explore nocturnal animals’ habits. 

We will look for animal activity and learn about adaptations to life in the dark. Stories, demonstrations and games help illustrate some of the challenges animals face on a nightly basis. Children need to be accompanied by an adult.

Wildflowers

Friday, July 20th – 3:00 p.m. to 4:30 p.m.

Connecticut has a diverse selection of wildflowers. After learning more about wildflowers grown in the area, the group will have a guided walk through the trails of Osbornedale State Park and have the opportunity to identify various plants. Open to all ages.

Fridays with Frances – A Look at the World of Japanese Woodblock Prints

Friday, July 20th – 1:00 p.m. to 2:00 p.m.

Learn about the history of Japanese Woodblock Prints which are created from images cut out of wooden blocks with ink applied and then pressed onto paper. 

The presentation will highlight pieces from the Osborne Homestead Museum. 

Conserving Our Resources

Saturday, July 21st – 10:30 a.m. to 12:00 noon

Energy and water are necessary resources that we use throughout our daily lives. In order to help the environment, it is important to learn how to conserve the resources that we have. Through a presentation and interactive game, participants will learn the effects of excess water and energy usage plus effective ways to reduce and conserve resources. Open to all ages.

Tree Identification Hike

Wednesday, July 25th – 2:00 p.m. to 4:00 p.m.

Join us at the Kellogg Center on a walk through the neighboring Osbornedale State Park. See a variety of beautiful trees and other types of plant life and learn facts about the trees in our state’s forests. This program is intended for children ages 8 and up.

Sunday at the Osborne Homestead Museum

Sunday, July 29th – 2:00 p.m.

Enjoy a talk on the career of architect Waldo S. Kellogg and his contributions to restructuring and redecorating the 1850 farmhouse, turning it into a vibrant example of Colonial Revival, federal style architecture. Learn about the unique architectural features of the museum.
