Juvenile Charged In Connection To Derby Middle School Threat

A 13-year-old girl was arrested Wednesday in connection to a written threat found in a bathroom at Derby Middle School Monday.

The threat, which alluded to a bomb and a gun, prompted the Board of Education to close the school Tuesday.

Police Chief Gerald Narowski issued a prepared statement Wednesday afternoon saying the suspect, an eighth-grade student at the school, was charged with first-degree threatening and breach of peace.

She is scheduled to appear in court in Waterbury, where juvenile cases are heard, on Nov. 20.

Her name is not being released because of her age.

The investigation is ongoing and the detective division continues to evaluate whether additional students were complicit,” Narowski said in the statement.

Derby Middle School opened again Wednesday, and had a 97 percent attendance rate, according to Jim Gildea, a member of the Derby Board of Education.

The chief’s statement said the threat lodged Monday terrorized an entire community.”

This department is partnered with the Derby School District and committed to fostering a positive school climate, free of violence and aggression,” the statement read.
