An Ansonia woman facing three years in prison for stealing more than $20,000 from an elementary school parent teacher organization expects to have paid all the money back by September, her lawyer said.
The woman, Kelly Kahyaoglu, 49, was scheduled to be sentenced at Superior Court in Milford Wednesday (June 25) on a single charge of first-degree larceny.
But Judge Frank Iannotti continued the case to Sept. 4 pursuant to an agreement between Kahyaoglu’s lawyer, Public Defender David Egan, and Assistant State’s Attorney Amy Bepko.
She pleaded guilty to the charge April 3.
Bepko told the judge Wednesday that Egan gave her proof that Kahyaoglu has made a “substantial dent” toward the $21,676 she admitted to stealing from the parent teacher organization at Prendergast Elementary School.
The prosecutor did not provide an exact amount Kahyaoglu has paid back to this point, but Egan said his client “expects to have (made) full restitution shortly.”
The plea deal in the case calls for a 10-year prison sentence to be suspended after Kahyaoglu serves up to three years behind bars, followed by five years of probation.
At her sentencing, Egan will have a right to argue for a completely suspended sentence, meaning she would avoid jail altogether.
She was arrested June 27 and charged by Ansonia Police with first-degree larceny after a 17-month investigation into allegations of theft from the parent teacher organization at the school.
In an arrest warrant, police said Kahyaoglu used a PTO debit card to spend $12,630 for her personal use, and withdrew $9,046.25 in cash using the card as well.
She allegedly spent the PTO’s money at Auto Zone, Bed Bath & Beyond, Bob’s, Comcast, Hollister Co., Intouch Wireless, Kohls, Lane Bryant, NAMCO, Ocean State Job Lot, Only for Her, Packers Pro Shop, Petland Discounts, Rite Aid, the Sports Authority, Sterling Pools, Team Fan Shop and Yankees Garage.
