Letter: Derby Should Not Honor Late Actor Brian Dennehy

To the Editor:

I am writing regarding a recent action by the Derby Board of Alders to provide a street sign to honor the late actor Brian Dennehy.

Apparently both the Board and his advocate Jack Walsh overlooked the fact that Dennehy lied about his time in the Marine Corps. He did not serve in Vietnam as he claimed nor was he wounded with shrapnel nor did he suffer a concussion in combat.

His lies and he lied multiple times-were revealed in a book by B.G. Burkett called Stolen Valor.” After that when pressed by the media, he admitted, I lied about serving in Vietnam. I did steal valor. That was very wrong of me. There is no real excuse for that.”

There is no real excuse for the Derby Board to honor this man The information about his falsehoods is available online. At the next meeting, I hope that the Board will rescind the decision to honor him . There is a list of those who were killed in action in World War II and other wars in the city hall. The Evening Sentinel published a list of those who served and those who were killed in World War II in 1945 when the war ended.

Perhaps a name could be chosen from that list, a man who never came home from the war. A real hero not one who played fake heroes on screen. Sharlene McEvoy, daughter of a World War II veteran and a niece of a Marine killed in action in the South Pacific.
