New Alderman Appointed in Ansonia

Peter Danielczuk, former first ward alderman and former Board of Aldermen president, was appointed alderman for the second ward during a special meeting Tuesday before the board’s regular meeting.

Danielczuk replaced James Fainer, who resigned his post on the board due to work conflicts.

Danielczuk did not seek reelection as first ward alderman last year because he moved out of the district.

Danielczuk did not run for a spot as a second ward alderman.

It is with deep regret that I am submitting my resignation as second ward alderman,” Fainer wrote in his letter. Fainer was not at the meeting Tuesday.

Due to my work commute and commitments in the New London area, I am unable to provide the time to devote to my aldermanic responsibilities,” Fainer wrote. The absence is unfair to our constituents.”

Danielczuk has a long history of service to Ansonia. He was an alderman in the 1970s and then again in the 1990s, where he served until last year. He is also a former Board of Education member and Economic Development commissioner.

Last month, the Board of Aldermen appointed another former member, David Knapp.

Knapp represents the seventh ward, replacing former alderman Tara Kolakowski, who stepped down after accepting a position as the government liaison for the city.

Tuesday, the Board of Aldermen also accepted the resignation of longtime Republican registrar of voters Hazel Hummel.

Mayor James Della Volpe said Hummel was leaving for personal health reasons. He thanked her for her years of devoted service to the city.”

She’s done a tremendous job for the city,” Danielczuk said. She is a true asset to the community.”
