No Change To School Board After Derby Recount

Photo: Ethan FryA recount Tuesday (Nov. 19) of the Board of Education race from Derby’s municipal elections resulted in some minor changes to vote tallies, but not the outcome of the election.

The results mean city Democrats will have a 6 – 3 majority on the new school board.

Tuesday’s recount began at 10 a.m. in Aldermanic chambers at City Hall and ended about 1 p.m., according to Derby Democratic Registrar of Voters Louise Pitney.

A total of 12 candidates — six Democrats and six Republicans — vied for spots on the nine-member board.

The recount was held because just 12 votes separated the winner with the fewest votes, Democrat James Stadt, with 1,515, from the next highest vote-getter, Republican Denise Bottone, with 1,503.

Stadt picked up two more votes as a result of Tuesday’s recount, bringing his total to 1,517.

Bottone, an incumbent, picked up five votes, to bring her total to 1,508, not enough to edge Stadt for the last spot on the board.
