Two hours before the polls closed on Election Day, Derby Democratic insiders were confident they were on their way to a big win — not just in the mayor’s race, but across the board.
It wasn’t false bravado or campaign Kool-Aid. Anita Dugatto’s campaign had done the homework.

Promising to usher in an era of transparency within city government, Anita Dugatto was sworn in as Derby’s 30th mayor Saturday morning during a ceremony at Derby High School.
“I want to re-affirm our commitment to integrity, transparency and a determined focus to rebuild our local economy through smart planning, smart growth, and smart economic development,” she said.

As a new approach to establishing her administration, Mayor-Elect Anita Dugatto is opening up the process for both paid executive and administrative staff and volunteer boards and commissions.
“I am asking all interested in serving the City of Derby, who share my passion for change and a positive vision for a better Derby, to come forward to help move Derby forward.” said Dugatto, who was recently elected as the first female mayor in the history of the City of Derby.

A recount Tuesday (Nov. 19) of the Board of Education race from Derby’s municipal elections resulted in some minor changes to vote tallies, but not the outcome of the election.
The results mean city Democrats will have a 6 – 3 majority on the new school board.

There were no changes in the Third Ward Aldermen race after a recount that lasted about three hours in Derby City Hall Tuesday.
The winners are Democrats David Anroman, Carmen DiCenso and Republican Peter Olenoski, Jr.
The recount was held because just two votes separated Republican incumbent Richard Dziekan from Anroman and Olenoski.

A recount in the Third Ward Aldermen’s race has been scheduled for 1 p.m. Tuesday, Nov. 12 in Derby City Hall, City/Town Clerk Laura Wabno announced.
The recount is scheduled to take place in the Aldermanic Chambers on the building’s second floor.

I would like to take the opportunity to publicly thank Mayor Jim DellaVolpe and Mayor Tony Staffieri for the honor of being able to work with them on numerous projects and issues over the many years that these fine gentlemen served their respective cities and citizens.
I always found them to be decent, hard-working individuals who shared one thing in common, love for their hometowns. Both of them always treated me respectfully and were always extending a welcome for me to join them at local events and ceremonies.
I will always be grateful to them for their cooperation and their service.

Not surprisingly, voter participation in the lower Naugatuck Valley this year was highest in towns with hotly contested races.
According to election returns posted on the Secretary of the State’s website, Derby led Valley municipalities in voter participation, where 3,090 of 6,555 voters went to the polls Election Day. That’s 47.1 percent of all registered voters.
Derby Democrat Anita Dugatto, a downtown dentist, defeated four-term incumbent Republican Mayor Anthony Staffieri by more than 400 votes.
