The fire was reported at 7:48 p.m., Derby Fire Department Chief William Nicoletti said.
A resident had been cooking on the grill, which was positioned atop the deck.
The residents called the fire department immediately and firefighters were able to quickly extinguish the blaze, Nicoletti said.
The fire damage to the deck was relatively minor.
