No Injuries In Derby House Fire

EUGENE DRISCOLL PHOTODerby firefighters put out a fire inside an exterior wall of a house on Seymour Avenue Monday before it could spread inside the home.

There were no injuries reported.

A woman living in the first floor of the two-family house at 102 Seymour Ave. called for help at about 5 p.m. after seeing smoke in her residence.

Units on scene found coal of some kind from a stove or something that were put into a plastic bucket that was up against the back of the house,” Derby Fire Department Chief Kurt Kemmesies, Jr. said.

A section of the wall about 10 feet by 10 feet under the siding was damaged.

The fire had extended underneath into siding and into the plywood underneath the siding, and it was extending toward the kitchen,” Kemmesies said.

Firefighters opened the wall up and put water on the flames.

From the inside, we pulled out the appliances,” Kemmesies said. We opened it up, got water on it real quick and luckily that stopped it from extending.”

The Derby Fire Marshal is investigating.

As firefighters were wrapping up the scene, a two-car crash was reported in Derby on Route 8. It did not sound like there were serious injuries, officials said.

As of 6:15 p.m., firefighters were waiting for a sand truck to take care of ice on the road from the fire hoses used to extinguish the fire.
