Oxford Schools To Remain Closed Until Nov. 7

The Oxford school district has announced on its website that schools will remain closed until Monday Nov. 7.

The town’s four schools have been closed since a freak October snow storm caused damage and power outages across town on Oct. 29.

On Wednesday, Nov. 2, the district placed the following message on its homepage:

Oxford Public Schools Closed Due to Storm Damage and Power Outages, Thursday, November 3, 2011 and Friday, November 4, 2011. School is scheduled to open on Monday, November 7, 2011.

Since Sunday, Connecticut Light & Power listed 100 percent of customers in Oxford without power.

On Wednesday morning, that number dropped to only 71 percent without power.

As of 2:30 p.m. Wednesday, CL&P was reporting that only 63 percent of its customers were still without power. The utility company expects to get everyone back online by Sunday at 11:59 p.m.

In addition to loss of power, the district was concerned about safety transporting students to school, with so much debris on the roads from the storms. One school building — a classroom building at Oxford Center School — was also damaged by a tree falling during the storm.

The district said it could be weeks before that building’s roof is repaired.

Oxford’s Quaker Farms School on Great Oak Road remains the town’s emergency shelter.
