DERBY — Five civic groups and the city’s police department are hosting a Fourth of July community event on the Derby Green.
The event is scheduled to start at 10:45 a.m. on July 4. Scroll down for the schedule of events.
The event focuses on patriotism, and recognizing the Fourth of July’s significance to U.S. history.
The Derby Green is in downtown Derby between Minerva and Elizabeth streets.
The day includes a ceremony recognizing the winners of a patriotic essay contest that was open to any seventh or eighth grade student living in Derby or attending school in Derby. The writers were asked to write about one of the 56 signers of The Declaration of Independence.
The top three student essays are scheduled to receive a monetary award, a plaque and a certificate. All others will receive a certificate. Three honorable mention students will be awarded historical Betsy Ross Flags.
