Police: Shoplifter Attacked Officer

An Ansonia man accused of shoplifting from Wal-Mart attacked a police officer and had to be Tased twice Sunday, police said.

Vincent Pickard, 30, was stopped by store security for allegedly trying to steal DVDs at about 7 p.m. from the Route 34 store.

He lunged at a police officer who came to the store to arrest him, Derby police Lt. Justin Stanko said.

The officer was hit several times in both shoulders. During the struggle, the officer deployed a Taser,” Stanko said.

Pickard kept fighting until Tased a second time, police said. The officer was not injured.

A search of Pickard’s person turned up a knife, Stanko said.

Pickard is charged with carrying a dangerous weapon, assaulting a police officer, second-degree breach of peace, interfering with a police officer and sixth-degree larceny.

Pickard posted a $12,500 bond and is due in court Aug. 5.
