SEYMOUR – The Seymour Board of Education on Dec. 9 celebrated the achievements of students and staff members during its final meeting of the year.
Here are the highlights:
The following students were nominated by one of their teachers and recognized as Seymour Champions for academic, social and community awareness.
*Bungay School
First grader Mackenzie Bullard was feted for starting up the Seymour Food 2 Kids program which provides snacks and food to struggling families in the community.
Third grader Kiley Sawicki was recognized for going out of her way to ensure others are included and for her awareness of how her fellow students are feeling.
*Chatfield Lo-Presti School
First grader Madison Miller was celebrated for always thinking about those around her and noticing the feelings of her peers and being quick to help or give a quick hug and a smile.
Fifth grader Evan Welsh was recognized for having an excellent memory, especially in math, and being aware of when a fellow student is absent from class, and filling them in on what they missed.
*Seymour Middle School
Seventh grader Charlie Anderson, a member of several school clubs and the reigning school spelling bee champion, was recognized for helping his peers stay organized and on track.
Seventh grader Lucy Milia was feted for exemplifying the attributes of awareness, and for being in tune and considerate of the feelings and well-being of others. Lucy is known for fostering a positive and inclusive environment.
*Seymour High School
Eleventh grader Jeremy Tomasheski, a student representative on the Seymour Board of Education, was honored for being “one of those kids that’s involved and aware of everything,” according to SHS Principal James Freund, and keeps his fellow students apprised of school sports by running the school’s athletic web page.
Top Soccer Coaches
The board also gave kudos to Aaron Pawluk and Thomas Cunningham for scoring top coaching honors as Boys Naugatuck Valley League Soccer Coach of the Year and Girls Naugatuck Valley League Soccer Coach of the Year, respectively.
Boys And Girls State Reps
Several SHS students were recognized by the board for their participation in the annual Boys State and Girls State program, run by the local American Legion, which focuses on leadership, problem-solving and teamwork. Boys State representative was Raymond Dong and Girls State representatives were Julia Marsala, Sarah Folsom, Ellie Savary, Ryan Sadick and Jastina Khand.
The students during the event earlier this year at the University of New Haven ran for various positions, including Secretary of State, City Council, Board of Alderman, and more, and learned firsthand about governance and civic engagement. They also heard from guest speakers, including Sen. Richard Blumenthal and Lt. Governor Susan Bysiewicz.
