Seymour residents on Thursday, May 9 will vote on whether to approve a $53.26 million budget for 2013 – 2014 that would increase taxes 1.91 percent.
The referendum will take place from 6 a.m. to 8 p.m. at the town’s community center on Pine Street.
The budget proposals would set the town’s tax rate at 33.46 mills.
The current mill rate is 32.83.
That means if voters approve the budget at Thursday’s referendum, a person who owns a house assessed at $230,000 would see their property taxes go from $7,550.90 to $7,695.80, an increase of $144.90.
Details
Town Budget: $22,208,664
Increase: 3.9 percent
Education Budget: $31,052,984
Increase 2.2 percent
Thursday will be Seymour’s first budget referendum of the year.
Residents vote separately on the town and school budgets.
Question 1 will ask residents to approve or reject the town government budget. Question 2 will ask for residents’ votes on the Board of Education budget.
A third question is for advisory reasons only and will ask if voters favor adding $377,000 for additional school resource officers at a later time.
The budget item for the school resource officers was removed from the budget by the Board of Finance — an adjustment requested by the school board’s chairman.
Last year voters did not approve a town budget until a third referendum, and a school budget until a fourth referendum.
A referendum has been tentatively scheduled for May 23 if voters shoot down the budget proposals Thursday.
A summary of the budget is posted below.
