Seymour Budget Vote Is Thursday!

Seymour residents on Thursday, May 23 will vote on whether to approve a $53 million budget for 2013 – 2014 that would increase taxes 1.3 percent.

The referendum will take place from 6 a.m. to 8 p.m. at the town’s community center on Pine Street.

The budget proposals would set the town’s tax rate at 33.26 mills.

The current mill rate is 32.83.

That means if voters approve the budget at Thursday’s referendum, a person who owns a house assessed at $230,000 would see their property taxes go from $7,550.90 to $7,649.80, an increase of $98.90.

Details

Town Budget: $22,045,915
Increase: 3.2 percent

Education Budget: $30,977,984
Increase 1.91 percent

Overall, the budget proposal totals $53,023,899 and reflects a 2.42 percent overall increase in spending.

Thursday will be Seymour’s second budget referendum of the year. At the first, the budget was defeated soundly May 9.

The town’s Board of Finance then met and decided to cut $155,000 from the town side of the budget and $75,000 from the school budget proposal.

Residents vote separately on the town and school budgets.

Question 1 on Thursday’s ballot will ask residents to approve or reject the town government budget.

Question 2 will ask for residents’ votes on the Board of Education budget.

A sample ballot for Thursday’s referendum is posted below.

Last year voters did not approve a town budget until a third referendum, and a school budget until a fourth referendum.
