The Seymour Wildcats lost to top-seeded Woodland Thursday 4 – 2 in the NVL championship softball game.
The win gives Woodland its first-ever NVL crown and raises the team’s record to 20 – 3.
The Wildcats dropped to 17 – 6.
Starting Seymour pitcher Stephanie Burt had to leave the game after the fourth inning because of an injury.
“Stephanie did well for the first two innings. Maybe they would have gotten to her anyway. Who knows?” Seymour coach Ken Pereiras said.
In the bottom of the third, Burt covered home plate on a passed ball. Although no Hawk scored, she heard something crack in her left foot and she wasn’t the same after that.
After the game, she had it checked out and it turned out her foot wasn’t broken. She’s day-to-day on her availability to play.
Following the play, Woodland senior tri-captain Kate Alfieri, who will be playing for Division I Quinnipiac University next year, delivered a two-run single up the middle with two outs to tie it 2 – 2.
Alfieri showed why she’ll be pitching at the Division I level and allowed only six hits, walked one and struck out five.
With Burt injured, sophomore lefty Kelly Ferris took over and hit senior tri-captain Aubrey Roulantis with a pitch to start the bottom of the fifth. Alfieri then smacked a two-run home run over the center field fence to give the Hawks a 4 – 2 lead and eventually the game.
“It’s a tough loss and everyone is bummed about it but we’ll get over it and head to states. A lot of people didn’t think we’d make it this far but to finish second in the NVL is a big accomplishment, considering who we lost from last year,” Burt said.
Seymour still has the chance to repeat as Class M champions. Seedings can be found on Friday at casciac.org.
“I think we have a chance,” Burt said. “We have to work together, not make stupid mistakes and keep our heads in the game.”
