Seymour detectives traveled to North Carolina Tuesday to bring a 39-year-old man wanted for allegedly sexually assaulting two underage girls back to Connecticut.
Juan Ortiz is charged with two counts of first-degree sexual assault and one count of risk of injury to a minor.
According to a prepared statement, police began investigating Ortiz in September 2012 after receiving a complaint alleging he was having “sexual relations with a minor female.”
Police said they corroborated the victim’s story, then learned there was a second victim. Police did not elaborate on the investigation, but said they got a warrant for his arrest.
However, Ortiz fled Seymour, according to police.
“Detectives received information and tracked Ortiz to Miami, where they worked closely with local law enforcement officials in Florida to assist with Ortiz’s apprehension,” the police statement read.
However, they couldn’t catch Ortiz, who remained a “felonious fugitive.”
Then, in January, Seymour police learned Ortiz was a temp worker with an employment agency in Greensboro, N.C.
Seymour police contacted police in North Carolina. Ortiz was taken into custody Jan. 14.
Ortiz waived extradition and arrangements were made with the State’s Attorney’s Office in Milford to bring him back to Seymour.
Detectives Steve Ditria and Scott Nihill made the trek down south to bring Ortiz back.
Ortiz used to live on New Street in Seymour.
He was arraigned Wednesday at Superior Court in Derby, where his bond was set at $250,000. He remains in Bridgeport Correctional Center, according to Correction Department records, and is due to appear at Derby court again March 5.
