Seymour police said an officer sustained minor injuries early Thursday after crashing his vehicle on West Church Street.
Lt. Paul Satkowski said an officer was on his way to the high school to back up another officer who was responding to a report of vandalism there about 4:15 a.m. when he lost control of his car and crashed.
The accident took place near where the street turns into Bungay Road, between Emma Street and Bungay Terrace.
Satkowski said the officer sustained “minor injuries” and was treated and released. He declined to name the officer, but others have told the Valley Indy it was John Martin.
The accident is under investigation.
“The car received some pretty heavy damage,” Satkowski said. “Because of that I had my accident reconstruction people assist in the investigation.”
“We know he was going to a call and lost control of the car,” he added.
Martin told others a deer jumped in front of his car and he crashed after swerving to avoid colliding with it.
The road was closed for several hours as officers took measurements at the scene to “try to get a better understanding of what happened,” Satkowski said.
Two 18-year-old men were arrested in connection to the call to which the officer was responding, according to Satkowski.
The names of the men weren’t available Thursday afternoon, he said, but they were charged with possession of burglary tools and loitering on or about school grounds.
Both posted $500 bonds and will appear at Superior Court in Derby at a later date.
The men apparently had a sledgehammer and spray paint in their possession outside the high school.
A source told the Valley Indy spray-painted graffiti was also discovered at the school.
