A Seymour resident was one of 10 high school students from across the state to receive a scholarship from an injury law firm this year.
Matthew Verrinder received $1,000 from the 2012 Carter Mario Injury Lawyers “Arrive Alive” Scholarship program.
Students were asked to submit essays and video presentations to the firm to help educate their peers on the real dangers of drunk driving and texting behind the wheel.
The scholarship also looks at academic excellence.
Each winning student received $1,000, and was honored at an event at the law firm’s Milford offices on May 10.
The 2012 Carter Mario Injury Lawyers Arrive Alive Scholarship winners are: Ashley Moxam – Hamden High School (Hamden, CT); Benjamin Anderson – Trumbull High School (Trumbull, CT); Bethany Pagan – Central Magnet High School (Bridgeport, CT); Brianne Kane – New Britain High School (New Britain, CT); Christopher Silvestri – Foran High School (Milford, CT); Emily Amarell – Simsbury High School (Simsbury, CT); George Cruz – North Haven High School (North Haven, CT); Matthew Verrinder – A Beka Academy (Seymour, CT); Rene Evans – Hartford Public High School (Hartford, CT); Robert Chapman – Ridgefield High School (Ridgefield, CT).
The Arrive Alive Scholarship program is a combination effort to financially assist students going onto college, but also to help make teens aware of the real dangers and perils of drunk driving and distracted driving.
The focus of the Arrive Alive Scholarship presented by Carter Mario Injury Lawyers is the only scholarship program of its kind in Connecticut.
Since the program’s inception in 2006, Carter Mario Injury Lawyers has awarded over $54,000 in scholarship money to 53 graduating high school seniors in Connecticut.
“Each year, we are amazed with the response and with the awareness that these outstanding students have of the dangers of texting while driving, and drinking alcohol and getting behind the wheel. But there is still much work to be done,” said law firm President & CEO Carter Mario. “The Arrive Alive Scholarship Program is our firms’ promise to our state’s teens to help educate and take a hard stance on the issue. Our goal, as it has been for the past seven years, is to help educate the young people of Connecticut in making smart decisions while on the road. If we save one life through this program, then it is all worth it,” adds Carter.
