Seymour residents on Thursday, June 6 will vote on whether to approve a $30.9 million school budget for 2013 – 2014.
The referendum will take place from 6 a.m. to 8 p.m. at the town’s community center on Pine Street.
At a referendum May 23 voters approved the $22,045,915 town budget by a vote of 806 to 752, but were less kind to the $30,977,984 school budget proposal, which was rejected by a vote of 827 to 727.
Days later the Board of Finance voted unanimously to trim $35,000 from the school budget proposal for the June 6 vote.
If voters approve the school budget Thursday, the town’s mill rate for 2013 – 2014 will be set at 33.23, a 1.2 percent increase over the current 32.83-mill tax rate.
That means a person with a house assessed at $230,000 would pay $7,642.90 in property taxes next year, an increase of $92 over their current tax bill of $7,550.90.
Overall, the budget proposal totals $52,988,899 and reflects a 2.36 percent overall increase in spending.
The town budget proposal approved by voters last week represents a 3.2 percent increase on the town government side of the budget.
The school budget proposal up for a vote Thursday would increase spending 1.79 percent year over year.
Thursday will mark the third referendum for the Seymour school budget this year.
Last year voters did not approve a town budget until a third referendum, and a school budget until a fourth referendum.
