Shed Fires In Derby, Seymour And Shelton

Firefighters in three towns dealt with shed fires over the weekend.

Luckily no injuries were reported.

In Shelton, firefighters put out a fire in a shed fire on Howard Avenue before it could spread to a house Saturday (Sept. 24).

The fire marshal is investigating the cause of the fire but said Monday it did not appear suspicious.

Firefighters were sent to 2 Howard Ave. about 6:45 p.m.

A detached shed next to the house was in flames when they arrived.

Shelton Fire Marshal James Tortora said firefighters knocked the fire down within about 10 minutes.

We got it stopped before it got in the house but it destroyed the shed and everything in it,” Tortora said.

The house’s exterior was scorched by the flames from the shed fire, the fire marshal said.

He estimated the damage at about $2,000.

Firefighters remained on scene for about an hour.

About 30 firefighters from the Echo Hose, White Hills, and Pine Rock park fire companies responded, while firefighters from Huntington remained on standby in case other calls came in, Tortora said.

In Derby, the fire marshal is investigating the cause of a shed fire outside a house on Grove Avenue that was reported about 6 p.m. Sunday.

Firefighters were able to quickly extinguish the blaze, though tools and contractor’s equipment inside the shed suffered smoke and heat damage.

Derby Fire Marshal Phil Hawks said the homeowner had stained stairs outside the shed in the hours before the fire.

Rags left inside the shed used in the staining process may have spontaneously combusted, Hawks said.

The fire marshal was on the phone with a manufacturer Monday trying to determine how long the rags have to be left out before they combust.

Finally, Seymour investigators said a shed fire on Highland Avenue remains under investigation. It was reported Saturday around 2:45 p.m.. The official cause is undetermined, but firefighters suspect it was accidentally started by a discarded cigarette.
