A Shelton man was badly injured Sunday after his Mustang was hit by a tire on Route 8.
Mark Smolen was driving his 2014 Mustang north on the highway in the left lane near exit 19 in Seymour when a tire from a trailer traveling in the opposite direction came loose, launched across the highway’s median and smashed into Smolen’s windshield.
Smolen lost control of his car, which went over a guard rail, down an embankment and into the trees.
He suffered severe head trauma and was taken to Waterbury Hospital.
The trailer was being pulled by a Chevrolet Silverado being driven by a Shelton resident.
State police are investigating.
The accident happened at about 12:45 p.m.
State police ask any witnesses or anyone with information to call Trooper Nicholas Caez at 203 – 393-4200, extension 3085.
