Fire Stations Damaged In Ansonia And Derby

It was a bad week to be a fire house in Ansonia and Derby.

Two fire stations — one on Olivia Street in Derby and one on Main Street in Ansonia — were damaged in separate vehicle wrecks.

On Friday, a woman escaped injured after crashing head on into a building in Derby.

According to a witness, the woman was driving a Ford SUV from Sixth Street when she rounded the corner and plowed into the front of the Derby Storm Engine Co. at 151 Olivia St.

The vehicle’s front end was pushed in like the letter v.”

The airbag went off, but the woman wasn’t injured.

Apparently the SUV had previously been experiencing mechanical problems, and the brakes failed.

The crash damaged the fire station’s garage doors. A fire truck inside the garage had minor damage.

The accident happened just before 9 a.m.

The driver’s name was not available and there was no word whether tickets were issued.

The Derby crash happened seven days after the Eagle Hose Hook & Ladder building was damaged on May 8.

According to an accident report, a volunteer firefighter was backing the company’s ladder truck into the garage at the corner of Main and East Main when he accidentally hit the building.

No injuries were reported.

The Ansonia crash happened at about 4:45 p.m. The ladder truck’s rear steel panel was damaged, as was a light tower on the rear passenger’s side.

The initial damage estimate to the truck was somewhere in the $10,000 to $20,000 range, according to the accident report.

Building inspectors and Mayor David Cassetti were on scene to check out the damage to the building, where a chunk of brick was torn away.

The ladder truck will be stored on West Main Street at Ansonia Rescue Medical Services while repairs are made at Eagle Hose.

No tickets were issued.
