DERBY — Police are investigating a drive-by shooting that was reported at about 1 a.m. Tuesday.
A resident from Hawthorne Avenue near Chatfield Street called police to report hearing shots fired. It was the only call police received regarding the incident.
Responding officers talked to the caller and searched the area of Nutmeg Avenue near the picnic grove, and the Little League field across the road.
Officers also searched nearby Chatfield Street, in the area of the city’s new, multi-million sports complex, and around the main entrance to the Derby High School/Middle School campus.
A short time later a patrol officer was waved down by a teen near a gas station on Seymour Avenue, roughly a half mile from where police had been looking.
The teen said he had been shot. A patrol officer took the teen, a Derby resident, to Griffin Hospital (about 1,000 feet from where the teen flagged down the cop).
He was transferred to Yale-New Haven Hospital, a trauma center that often treats gunshot wounds.
In a Facebook post Tuesday, Derby police said the teen was shot in the area of the athletic complex.
The victim was grazed by two bullets fired from a vehicle, police said.
The teen was released from the hospital as of 10 a.m. Monday.
Police sent a message to the owners of “Ring” security cameras asking for information. Security cameras on public buildings in the area are also being checked.
Anyone who saw or heard anything is being asked to call Derby police at 203 – 735-7811.
