There were a few tense moments in the driveway of Seymour Board of Education member Yashu Putorti Tuesday after his daughter’s vehicle caught fire.
Luckily the flames did not spread to Putorti’s home and no injuries were reported.
Firefighters were sent to Putorti’s Greenwood Circle home at 3:45 p.m.
Seymour Fire Department Assistant Chief Steve Childs said a neighbor had tried to put out the blaze with a fire extinguisher before firefighters arrived.
“They didn’t have much luck with it,” Childs said. “We got here and extinguished the rest of it.”
The vehicle belongs to the daughter of Seymour Board of Education Chairman Yashu Putorti, who rushed home from work in Shelton when he heard about the fire.
“She called me up and said ‘I think my car’s on fire’,” Putorti said while standing on his front porch Tuesday. “I said ‘Don’t call me, call 911.’”
Putorti said his daughter goes to college in New Haven and had just returned to Seymour from there.
He said he was glad no one was injured.
“All I know now is I have to move it because it smells pretty bad,” he added.
Childs said the cause of the fire will be investigated by the town’s fire marshal.
Emergency personnel were clearing the scene by just after 4 p.m.
About 20 firefighters — an engine from Great Hill Hose Company, and an engine and rescue truck from Citizens Engine Company — responded to the blaze, Childs said.
