ANSONIA — The Ansonia Board of Police Commissioners voted on Thursday to offer Wayne Williams the position of chief of the Ansonia Police Department.
“Chief Williams, congratulations on your appointment,” said John Tar, president of the board.
Williams was named acting chief by the police commission last August, after Andrew Cota retired.
The Ansonia Board of Aldermen already authorized a contract to be negotiated with Williams for the department’s top spot.
Now that the police commission has also backed Williams for the job, he just has to sign an employment contract with the city.
The police commission vote happened after a long executive session Thursday night to discuss the matter. The vote was 4 – 1, with Paul Heon casting the dissenting vote.
Williams’ salary is $143,000.
Williams emailed The Valley Indy on Wednesday when asked about the possibility of getting the chief’s job permanently.
“I have held most of the positions at the police department and have learned a lot about policing and people over those three decades,” Williams said. “I have found the community to be very supportive of my officers because they have a deep caring for this community and profession. While some of the faces and names of our personnel have changed over the years, it has been my honor to work for and with them. I can think of no greater achievement than to have the opportunity to lead the officers and staff at the Ansonia Police Department along with working with the residents of this City to make it a safer environment.”
