A 20-year-old Derby man was arrested Tuesday after trying to steal copper wire from the Connecticut Light & Power storage yard on Great Hill Road, police said.
It marked the third time this year the yard has been a target for wire thieves. Click here and here for previous stories.
The call came in at 11:30 p.m., from state police at Troop A in Southbury reporting an alarm had gone off at the storage yard.
The responding officers called in a state police canine after closing off the perimeter. The dog tracked the suspect down.
“The dog was what found him up there, hiding on top of a tractor trailer unit,” said Sgt. Daniel Semosky, Resident State Trooper supervisor.
Daniel Patrick Zilli, of 67 Commodore Commons, Derby, was charged with third degree criminal trespass, second degree criminal mischief, sixth degree larceny and criminal attempt at larceny.
The high value of scrap metal, including copper, is driving the attempted thefts, Semosky said.
“It was a great job again. Both our evening and midnight shifts converged on it,” Semosky said.
