Fire marshals are trying to determine whether an accelerant was used to start a fire that damaged the Seymour garbage transfer station off Silvermine Road Saturday.
Firefighters were sent to the scene at 7:05 p.m.
Lt. Paul Satkowski of the Seymour Police Department said he was at his son’s baseball game nearby when he heard a popping noise, then saw smoke coming from the area of the transfer station.
Arriving firefighters saw a small shack used as an office on fire. There was also fire on the ground outside a large hopper.
The flames were quickly extinguished, but not before burning through the shack’s roof.
Fire Marshal Paul Wetowitz requested state fire marshals come to the scene with a trained dog to sniff out a possible accelerant.
“The fact the fire was outside the building on the ground is an indication there was some human involvement there,” Wetowitz said. “They will collect evidence. We’ll take statements. The Seymour Police Department will do some further investigation.”
In addition to the fire, a back hoe next to the hopper was vandalized, Satkowski said. Its window was smashed.
Satkowski said there have been acts of vandalism at the transfer station over the years. It is operated by the town’s Department of Public Works.
It’s in an isolated area, surrounded by woods.
