Karalyn Meineke, a sophomore at Ansonia High School, never knew there used to be 15 different mens shops in downtown Ansonia.
Then she sat down with senior citizens at the Ansonia Senior Center and listened to stories about their lives.
“That’s really shocking,” Meineke said about the Main Street revelation.
Meineke is one of dozens of Ansonia High School students who have spent time with Ansonia seniors during different activities hosted by the Ansonia High School Human Relations Club. Meineke is the club’s president.
On Tuesday, the club members met with seniors at the Senior Center on Main Street for its annual ice-cream social.
They played video games, a little bocci and traded stories over ice cream sundaes.
The club has also hosted different inter-generational events, such a dinner party and other conversations.
Club adviser Nick Collicelli said the experiences broaden the teens’ horizons while teaching them history in a more hands-on way.
