Two 16-year-old boys have been charged with third-degree arson in connection to the May 7 fire at the Seymour transfer station.
The fire closed the transfer station for about a week and caused some $30,000 in damage.
After conducting interviews immediately after the fire, police identified the two teens as suspects. Meanwhile, evidence from the scene was sent to the state’s forensic lab for testing.
A week later, the state Fire Marshal’s Office arson hot line received an anonymous tip also identifying the two teens as suspects.
Youth Officer Joseph DeNigris submitted two arrest warrant affidavits to the Juvenile Court in Waterbury. A judge signed off on the warrants and the arrests were made.
The two teens turned themselves in while accompanied by their parents.
They are also charged with second-degree criminal mischief and third-degree trespass.
The transfer station was closed at the time of the fire. Some vandalism was also reported to a machine at the location.
The two teens are due in juvenile court May 27 and June 1.
They were released to the custody of their parents.
The investigation was conducted by the Seymour Police Department in conjunction with the Seymour Fire Marshal’s Office and the State of Connecticut Fire Marshall’s Office.
