The Derby Pee Wee Cheerleaders, who compete in the Pop Warner Small Intermediate division, had a heck of a year.
The girls are 11 years old and are in the sixth grade.
They placed first in the Southern CT Championships and first in the CT State Championships held at the New Haven Field House in October.
They placed first in the New England Regional Qualifier held at the MassMutual Center in Springfield, MA in November and they placed first in the New England Regionals held at the DCU Center in Worcester, MA in November earning the trip to the National Championships.
They competed in the National Championships at the ESPN Wide World of Sports in Disney World last week, placing fourth out of 14 teams in the Small Intermediate division.
They were also one of three teams in the entire Pee Wee division nominated for the Spirit of Sport Award.
The writer is the father of one of the cheerleaders!
