On Thursday night, May 16, Mayor Tony Staffieri officially announced that he will be running for a 5th term as Mayor of Derby.
The announcement was made at his [first] fundraiser which was held at La Sala (at Sons of Italy in Derby).
A large crowd, of over 300 people, turned out to show their support for Mayor Staffieri and join him for an evening of family style dining. The food was prepared by Staffieri’s own son, Anthony.
The Mayor started off his remarks with the announcement that he would be running again and by thanking everyone for their continued support.
The Mayor spoke briefly about his opponent as well. He mentioned that she is running on a platform of “it’s time for change,” and he wonders what exactly needs changing.
He continued by mentioning that the mill rate was reduced this year, we have an excellent bond rating, our local economy is stable, we have new development going on, and we are completing the third phase of our greenway and will be moving on to phase 4.
The Mayor asked, “What does she mean when she says it’s time for a change?”
Tony thanked all of his campaign staff and volunteers for making this latest run possible. He stressed that this is a team effort and couldn’t be accomplished without his great team.
In closing, the Mayor said that he couldn’t be happier with the way our City is going.
The start of the campaign is also marked with the launch of the Mayor’s Facebook page, Staffieri4Mayor2013, where you can view photos from the fundraiser, and keep up with the Mayor’s campaign activities.
The Mayor will also be Tweeting, daily, and there will be a website up in the near future.
I recently told Dr. Anita Dugatto, as my personal family dentist, that although being a registered Republican and supporter of Mayor Tony Staffieri — that I would not campaign against her — in view of the fact that she is a qualified Democratic Mayoral candidate, based on her 10 year public service record as a member of the Derby Board of Apportionment and Taxation. However, beginning her election campaign at former Mayor Marc Garofalo’s home — “may come back to haunt her” — based on his former inauspicious record as four-term Mayor of Derby. Everyone seems to know that Mr. Garofalo has no love for Mayor Staffieri — since he ousted him from office. However, our former Mayor has personally failed to challenge Mayor Staffieri for several elections now– as he obviously failed to muster any support for a mayoral reelection try from the Democratic Town Committee. Although I like Dr. Anita personally — she has a tough election road ahead of her in trying to oust Mayor Tony — led by the fact that he has apparently been able keep Derby taxes from increasing in a very bad national economy.
Well, that promise lasted about 5 hours.
Thanks to the work of the Tax Board, which Anita Dugatto has been an active member for several terms, taxes have been reduced this year.
Stan, please show me in the minutes of any Tax Board meeting where Tony Staffieri voted to “keep Derby taxes from increasing in a very bad national economy.”
The truth is, the Office of the Mayor has absolutely no say in whether taxes are increased or decreased. Stop trying to muddy the waters and try to keep a promise to your dentist.
