Ed Strang Day began in 1994 when Derby welcomed home actor Brian Dennehy, who returned to honor his childhood Cubmaster, Edmund D. Strang – a local Scouting pioneer and Derby Hall of Fame member. Today, the tradition continues, inspiring new generations to join in the adventures of Scouting.
Families will also learn about the Valley’s long and proud Scouting tradition:
- Troop 3 Derby, founded in 1914, meets at Derby Second Congregational Church. (Free membership registration to join!)
- Pack 3 Derby, started in 1927 by Ed Strang, meets at Derby Methodist Church. (Free membership registration to join!)
- Venture Crew 33, founded in 1939, is co-ed and sponsored by the Derby-Shelton Rotary, offering high-adventure programs for teens and young adults.(Free membership registration to join!)
- Troop 101 Shelton, sponsored by Huntington Congregational Church, is an all-girls troop offering the same exciting Scouting experiences. (Membership registration available.)
Scouting is open to everyone – from kindergarten through young adulthood. Representatives will be on hand to answer questions and register new members on the spot (with a parent or guardian present).
“For over 115 years, Scouting has built character, citizenship, and fitness for youth right here in Derby,” said Troop 3 Scoutmaster Randy Ritter. “Ed Strang Day is the perfect chance for kids to try out Scouting for themselves – and for families to discover how the program can help their children grow while having fun.”
So grab your friends, bring your family, and spend the day with us on Derby Green. Adventure, friendship, and fun await – and it’s all free!
