ANSONIA — Police are investigating a homicide that took place Sunday afternoon in Ansonia on the Derby border.
Derby police responded to a report of a pedestrian struck by a vehicle near Coe Lane at about 4:40 p.m. At first police thought they were dealing with a hit and run. Police found a badly injured 20-year-old woman at the scene — which was actually Coe Lane near N. Coe Lane in Ansonia on the Derby border.
Police determined the woman had “injuries consistent with an assault,” Ansonia Police Lt. Patrick Lynch said. The woman was taken to Griffin Hospital, where she was pronounced dead. Police did not talk about the nature of the injuries.
Her name was not released. She is from Derby.
Police searched and found a Pontiac Aztec connected to the incident, Lynch said.
Police are trying to determine if the woman was assaulted while a passenger in the car, and whether she jumped from the vehicle or was left there.
A suspect has been identified but was not in custody as of 10:15 p.m.
“We’re hoping to resolve the case quickly. We are currently following up on several leads. We’re not going to release the particulars of what we know until we can verify the information,” Lynch said.
The state’s medical examiner will perform an autopsy to determine the cause of death. The State Police Major Crime Central District responded to help process the crime scene.
